A former partner of Doug Emhoff, the second gentleman, has expressed feelings of "embarrassment and humiliation" after an incident in which he allegedly slapped her following a gala dinner at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. She claims that Emhoff, who is married to Vice President Kamala Harris, has constructed a "completely fabricated persona" in his public life.
The individual, a New York attorney referred to as "Jane," recounted her experience in an interview with the Daily Mail, stating that she was attempting to give a valet approximately $100 to expedite their access to a taxi when the incident occurred. She described being taken by surprise as Emhoff approached her unexpectedly.
In her account, she detailed the moment he turned her around by her shoulder, leaving her unprepared and in high heels while wearing an evening gown in the early hours of the morning. The force of the slap caused her to spin around, leaving her in a state of shock.
"There was no confrontation or dispute," she remarked. "At that instant, his facade fell away, revealing his true nature."
Earlier this month, three of Jane's friends came forward with the initial claims against Emhoff. Two of them were informed about the alleged slap right after it occurred, while the third learned of it six years later, in 2018. "What is alarming for a woman who has experienced this is witnessing the entirely constructed image being presented," Jane explained to the Daily Mail, detailing her reasons for choosing to speak publicly.
He is being portrayed as the complete opposite of his true self, which is profoundly surprising.
A representative for Emhoff has strongly refuted the allegations, stating to Semafor, “Any implication that he would or has ever assaulted a woman is untrue.” According to the report, Jane and Emhoff connected on Match.com in 2012 while she lived in New York and he was in Los Angeles. Their first date took place in March of that year, during which Emhoff invited his eldest son, Cole, to join them. Jane later reflected that this should have raised concerns, describing their relationship as “an intense few months.” She recounted a trip to Los Angeles in April 2012, where Emhoff frequently hinted at marriage and children, characterizing his behavior as love-bombing. Both Jane and her current spouse are registered Democrats who supported President Biden in the 2020 election cycle, contributing over $10,000 to his campaign.
Following the alleged incident in France, Jane found herself in a state of disbelief after Emhoff struck her during a night filled with alcohol. She recounted her immediate reaction, stating, "The only thing I could think to do was slap him back." In a moment of confusion, she slapped him on both cheeks, only to be interrupted by the arrival of the valet, who ushered her into the car. Jane had intended to return to the hotel alone, but Emhoff forcibly entered the vehicle against her wishes.
Reflecting on the situation, Jane expressed feelings of embarrassment and humiliation, noting how a once-enjoyable experience devolved into a violent confrontation. She recalled questioning Emhoff about his actions, incredulous that he had slapped her. His response, that he believed she was flirting with the valet, left her stunned and searching for clarity in a moment that felt surreal.
During the car ride, Jane reached out to a friend in New York to inform him of the incident, seeking reassurance and validation of her experience. She felt a sense of urgency to communicate her situation, fearing the unpredictability of being alone with someone she thought she knew. Additionally, she had lingering doubts about Emhoff, particularly after learning of his past infidelity, which further complicated her feelings about the encounter.
She recounted the conversation from April 2012, stating, “I simply asked him one question, and he proceeded to share the entire story.” She noted his nonchalant demeanor as he described the incident, mentioning that he had yelled at her. While he never explicitly stated that he had physically harmed her, he expressed his intense anger, which she claimed led to her losing the pregnancy.
Reflecting on the situation, she admitted, “At that moment, I wanted to trust him, as it seemed we were developing a serious relationship.” She had recently met his children, parents, and several colleagues at the law firm Venable, yet she still felt a sense of unease. Jane further disclosed that Emhoff had arranged for Naylor to sign an $80,000 nondisclosure agreement as part of a settlement. The day following the alleged incident, she asserted that Emhoff showed no remorse and implied that they were “even” since she had retaliated by slapping him back. A week later, she shared her experience with a friend who had worked with Emhoff and warned her about his negative reputation with women.
The Daily Mail has previously highlighted allegations from the future second gentleman's former colleagues at Venable, who described his behavior as "inappropriate" and "misogynistic" towards female staff members.
A lawsuit from 2019, which was reviewed by The Post, accused Emhoff of hiring an assistant named "Katya," who was perceived as unqualified but deemed "young, attractive, and friendly with the powerful men in the office."
In a recent interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Emhoff dismissed what host Joe Scarborough referred to as “tabloid stories about your personal life,” labeling them as distractions intended to divert attention from their work. Despite this, he did not refute Jane's account, which she shared with the Daily Mail, expressing frustration over the lack of media attention to her allegations.
When certain news outlets reiterated your findings, they omitted the assertion regarding the teacher's pregnancy, which infuriated me. The situation is unmistakably evident, and I find it utterly repulsive.
In hindsight, Jane expressed to the Daily Mail that the incident was ultimately beneficial, as it revealed his true nature and prompted her to recognize the importance of not spending any more time with him.
