Hezbollah fires at Tel Aviv as fighting rages with Israeli troops

Smoke billows from Tyre in southern Lebanon following Israeli air strikes on Wednesday. The situation remains tense as tensions escalate in the region.

Hezbollah militants launched rockets at the Tel Aviv metropolitan area on Wednesday morning for the second consecutive day, prompting millions of Israelis to seek refuge in bomb shelters. The Iranian-backed group also targeted northern border towns and the Galilee region, including the city of Nazareth.

The military reported that two rockets aimed at central Israel were successfully intercepted by air defense systems. While there were no immediate reports of injuries from this latest attack, rocket shrapnel did cause damage to a vehicle in the coastal city of Herzliya. Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the assault, asserting that it specifically targeted the “Glilot base of the Military Intelligence Unit 8200” located in the suburbs of Tel Aviv.

On Tuesday morning, Hezbollah had already fired approximately five rockets at central Israel, triggering sirens throughout the region, including in Tel Aviv. Concurrently, the group launched around 15 rockets at the Upper Galilee and the Golan Heights, with most being intercepted. A subsequent rocket attack on Kibbutz Neot Mordechai in the Galilee resulted in the death of one IDF soldier and injuries to at least two others.

The military reported that approximately 30 projectiles were launched from Lebanon during an assault that resulted in the death of Master Sgt. (res.) Saar Eliad Navarsky, 27, a resident of Tel Aviv. Since Hezbollah initiated hostilities against Israel following Hamas's massacre of around 1,200 individuals on October 7, 2023, official statistics indicate that 60 individuals have lost their lives, comprising 28 Israeli civilians, 30 IDF soldiers, a Thai national, and an Indian citizen.

Furthermore, the ongoing assaults by Hezbollah have led to injuries for at least 570 individuals, with around 340 of them being civilians. The situation has prompted a significant response from Israel, particularly in light of the need to ensure the safe return of approximately 60,000 residents who were evacuated from communities along the northern border, a goal that was officially incorporated into the war objectives on September 17.

In a recent development, the IDF confirmed that Hashem Safieddine, a potential successor to the deceased Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, was killed in an airstrike conducted by the Israeli Air Force three weeks prior. This escalation in military actions underscores the intensifying conflict and the strategic objectives of Israel in the region.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that its aircraft executed a targeted, intelligence-driven operation against Hezbollah's primary intelligence facility, which was intentionally situated underground amidst a civilian area in Dahiyeh.

This operation resulted in the deaths of 25 Hezbollah operatives, including Safieddine and Ali Hussein Hazima, the head of the intelligence unit. Safieddine, a first cousin of Nasrallah, had previously been killed in an Israeli airstrike the prior month and often assumed the role of acting secretary-general of Hezbollah during Nasrallah's absences from Lebanon.
